In the middle of the night, a distress signal was sent from another ship, the Explorer. It appears that the ship had run into an iceberg and was taking on too much water. The passengers were evacuated from the ship and spent three hours in the cold Antarctic waters waiting for help. The captain of our ship, The Antarctica Dream, received the distress call and responded by turning the ship 180 degrees to head North. Unfortunately, we were about 13 hours away. But he was able to relay the signal to other ships that were closer to the sinking ship. In the end, all passengers and crew survived. Upon arising this morning, we were quite surprised to see we had not landed at Neko Harbor, our next leg of the race. Instead, we were still sailing at sea silent with the surrounding icebergs. It was with great respect and exquisite pain that our Expedition Leader, Julio, unfolded the events of the night before. A story made quite difficult to tell, as Julio had apparently spend his first 6 years as part of the Explorer. And with each passing word, his reality became our realty. A ship in the Antarctica Sea was sinking. A grand lady of the sea, the Explorer, was now going to be one with the sea....forever. We've spent the rest of the day reacting to the news. Most of the passengers have been able to contact family and friends to let them know we are all fine. But it is a sombre reminder that nature still rules the world. And despite all the surrounding beauty of our adventure, it's not always fun and games............

So glad you guys are ok! We wondered if you were able to have turkey out at sea. Is turkey of the sea the same as "chicken of the sea"? Looking forward to your return!

Gosh, I felt chills while reading your entries. I'm glad that all the Explorer passengers made it-- another reminder that despite the effect we have on it, we do not control the earth. You'd better not decide to stay in Antarctica-- work is so quiet without you!

Great to hear you are doing well. It all sounds a bit surreal and amazing. Like something from some other world. Your being there makes it a much closer world event. Keep us posted. Rebecca
